Estereotipos sobre los españoles.. La verdad es que tiene mucha razon. Pero.. ¿ quien puede resistirse a una buena siesta en fin de semana o una paella frente al mar?.. Esta en Ingles y Español, y reflexiona sobre grandes topicos sobre los españoles.. temas como los toros, el flamenco, la siesta, incluso la sangria!

En la entrada anterior os hablaba de un artículo – The Spaniard: Everything you need to know for dealing with the locals (Los españoles: todo lo que se necesita saber para tratar con los nativos en el que un británico trataba de explicar a sus compatriotas cómo éramos los españoles con estereotipos bastante duros –aunque no desencaminados, decía- e iba a traducirlo para compartirlo pero he encontrado este otro artículo que, persiguiendo la misma finalidad, lo hace desde un punto de vista más sosegado y, creo yo que más certero, desmontando algunos de esos tópicos.

(In the previous post I spoke of an article – The Spaniard: Everything you need to know for dealing with the locals – in which a Briton tried to explain to his countrymen how the Spanish were with pretty rough – but not misguided, I said – stereotypes and I would translate it to share but I came across this other article that, pursuing the same objective, does so from a more sedate and, I believe that more accurate point of view by removing some of these topics.)

The Truth About Spanish Stereotypes
Many stereotypes about Spain have little to do with today’s reality. In 1950 Spain was a poor country, still trying to recover from its civil war, and many stereotypes arose at that time. Once Spain had the 9th highest gross domestic product (GDP) in the world and it did have one of the fastest growing economies in the European Union. Spain used to be a cheap country to visit, but no longer. Cost of living increases means that Madrid is the 26th most expensive city in the world now, and Barcelona No. 31. However with the fall in the housing market economy Spain’s outlook is rather dull.

La verdad sobre los estereotipos españoles
Muchos estereotipos sobre España tienen poco que ver con la realidad de hoy. En 1950 España era un país pobre, que todavía trataba de recuperarse de su guerra civil, y muchos estereotipos surgieron en ese momento. Pero España ha llegado a alcanzar el 9º puesto en Producto Interno bruto (PIB) [hoy estamos en el 12º] en el ranking mundial y contaba con una de las economías con el crecimiento más rápido de la Unión Europea. España era un país barato para visitar, pero ya no. El aumento del coste de vida significa que Madrid es ahora la 26ª ciudad más cara del mundo, y Barcelona la 31ª. Sin embargo, con la caída de la economía de mercado de la vivienda las perspectivas de España son más bien inciertas.

A study (unclear where this information has come from) shows that Americans and Southeast Asians are the people who believe more in these stereotypes. Stereotypes are used as mental shortcuts to classify people quickly. They are usually wrong, dangerous, and be the basis for prejudice. This essay will try to look at some of the common stereotypes.

Un estudio (no está claro de dónde viene esta información) muestra que los estadounidenses y los asiáticos del sureste son las personas que creen en estos estereotipos. Los estereotipos se utilizan como atajos mentales para clasificar a la gente rápidamente. Suelen estar equivocados, ser peligrosos, y ser la base de prejuicios. En este ensayo se tratará de ver algunos de los estereotipos más corrientes.

Spain is the European country after France that has the most tourism. When the Spanish government had tourist campaigns in other countries in the past, they showed the sunshine, the beaches, flamenco dancing, and bullfighting. This may have helped create some of the stereotypes about Spain. Today Spain needs a new image, to show how modern and progressive it is. They need to develop a national brand that is closer to reality. Let us look at some of these stereotypes.

España es el país europeo, después de Francia, con mayor turismo. Cuando en el pasado el gobierno español hacía campañas turísticas en otros países, mostraban el sol, las playas, el baile flamenco y las corridas de toros. Esto puede haber contribuido a crear algunos de los estereotipos sobre España. Hoy en día España necesita una nueva imagen, para mostrar lo moderna y progresista que es. Necesitan desarrollar una marca nacional que se acerque más a la realidad. Veamos algunos de estos estereotipos.

1. The Spanish are lazy and love to sleep the siesta.
In the European Union, the Spanish have the longest working hours and they work very hard. You do not get to have the (once) 9th highest GDP in the world by being lazy. Yes, the Spanish like to sleep the siesta, but only about 20% of them can do so, and those are the retired and the ones who live in small rural towns. The population of Spain is concentrated now in big and medium sized cities. Many people now live in the suburbs, quite far from where they work, and do not have time to go home for lunch, what with the traffic. So they cannot sleep the siesta. They probably sleep the siesta on weekends, when they can.
Health authorities say that it is healthy to sleep the siesta, so that the body can recover during the day. The siesta was much more of an occurrence in the past, especially in the south of Spain, because of the heat. Now air conditioning is everywhere and this has changed many things.
The Spanish also have less vacation than their other European counterparts.
The Spanish also sleep less than other Europeans.

1. Los españoles son perezosos y les encanta dormir la siesta.
En la Unión Europea, los españoles tienen los horarios de trabajo más largos y que trabajan muy duro. No se llega a tener (una vez) el 9º PIB del mundo siendo perezosos. Sí, a los españoles les gusta dormir la siesta, pero sólo alrededor del 20% puede hacerlo, y son los jubilados y los que viven en pequeños pueblos rurales. La población de España se concentra hoy día en grandes y medianas ciudades. Muchas personas ahora viven en urbanizaciones, muy lejos de donde trabajan, y no tienen tiempo de ir a casa a comer, por el tráfico. Así que no pueden dormir la siesta. Es probable que duerman la siesta los fines de semana, cuando pueden.
Las autoridades sanitarias señalan que dormir la siesta es saludable, para que el cuerpo pueda recuperarse durante el día. La siesta fue mucho más que una ocurrencia en el pasado, sobre todo en el sur de España, a causa del calor. Ahora el aire acondicionado está en todas partes y esto ha cambiado muchas cosas.

2. Spain is the land of sunshine and beaches.
This is true. Spain has more sunshine than the rest of Europe because it is at the southern tip of Europe. Yet its geography is very varied. There are the central plateau, the Mediterranean coast, the Atlantic coast, and the Pyrenees. In the north there is less sun than in the south and in the central plateau it can get very cold in winter. The sun is predominant along the Mediterranean and in the south, in Andalusia. Of course the north can be colder and has more rain throughout the year than the south.
The beaches in Spain have a very wide variety, from the Mediterranean to the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands to the waves along the North coast. So this stereotype is true. Some beaches are monitored on a daily basis and there are high standards of cleanliness required to have the European Blue Flag, the sign of quality.

2. España es la tierra del sol y de las playas.
Esto es cierto. España cuenta con más días de sol que el resto de Europa porque está en el extremo sur de Europa. Sin embargo, su geografía es muy variada. Están la meseta central, la costa del Mediterráneo, la costa atlántica, y los Pirineos. En el norte hace menos sol que en el sur y en la meseta central puede hacer mucho frío en invierno. El sol predomina a lo largo del Mediterráneo y en el sur, en Andalucía. Por supuesto, el norte puede ser más frío y cuenta con más lluvias durante todo el año que el sur.
Las playas en España tienen una variedad muy amplia, desde las del Mediterráneo hasta las de las Islas Baleares y las de las Islas Canarias hasta las olas a lo largo de la costa norte. Así que este estereotipo es cierto. Algunas playas son objeto de un seguimiento diario y se requiere un alto grado de limpieza para tener la bandera azul europea, señal de calidad.

3. Spain is the land of bullfights.
The bullfight is no longer considered a sport in Spain, but is described as a cultural tradition. Yes, there are bullfights in Spain, but their popularity is decreasing every year. Today only 25% of the population supports bullfighting and young people prefer going to football games. The majority of people who go to bullfights are middle aged and older people. In some communities, bullfights are no longer allowed. This tradition is entering a crisis because fewer people attend the bullfights every year. There is now a growing and progressive majority that wants to get rid of the bullfight because it considers the bullfight as something cruel, something that is irrelevant to modern life. Time will tell!
There are powerful economic forces that want to keep the bullfights alive. There are rich groups that grow the bulls for the bullfights. A popular bullfighter in Spain has been reported to make more than 5,000,000 euros a year. The owners of the bullrings want to keep the bullfights. Many politicians want the bullfights, especially if their communities enjoy the bullfights. Time will tell!

3. España es el país de las corridas de toros.
Las corridas de toros ya no se consideran un deporte en España, sino una tradición cultural. Sí, hay corridas de toros en España, pero su popularidad disminuye cada año. Hoy en día sólo el 25% de la población apoya las corridas de toros y los jóvenes prefieren ir al fútbol. La mayoría de las personas que van a las corridas de toros son de mediana edad y personas mayores. En algunas comunidades, las corridas de toros ya no están permitidas. Esta tradición está entrando en crisis debido a que menos personas asisten a las corridas de toros cada año. Ahora hay una creciente y progresiva mayoría, que quiere acabar con las corridas, ya que las consideran algo cruel e irrelevante para la vida moderna. ¡El tiempo dirá!
Hay poderosas fuerzas económicas que quieren mantener las corridas de toros vivas. Hay grupos adinerados que crían toros para las corridas. Se sabe que un torero de renombre en España puede llegar a ganar más de 5.000.000 de euros al año. Los propietarios de las plazas de toros desean mantener las corridas de toros. Muchos políticos apoyan las corridas de toros, sobre todo si a sus comunidades les gustan las corridas de toro. ¡El tiempo dirá!

4. Spain is the land of flamenco.
It is said that the majority of the population do not know how to dance flamenco. Flamenco has its stronghold in Andalusia, especially in Seville. Flamenco is not an easy dance, and one has to go to dance school to learn it. Flamenco dancers are very dedicated people because of the difficulty of the dance, and it requires constant practice. Every region of Spain has its traditional dance, but definitely the flamenco is the most dramatic dance. The gypsies of Andalusia were and are the stars and experts of this dance. There are famous flamenco schools in Spain now that attract a large number of foreigners from Europe, the Americas, and the Orient.

4. España es la tierra del flamenco.
Se dice que la mayoría de la población no sabe bailar flamenco. El flamenco tiene su bastión en Andalucía, especialmente en Sevilla. El flamenco no es un baile fácil, y uno tiene que ir a una escuela de baile para aprender. Los bailaores de flamenco son personas muy entregadas debido a la dificultad de la danza, y requiere una práctica constante. Cada región de España tiene su danza tradicional, pero sin duda el flamenco es la danza más dramática. Los gitanos de Andalucía fueron y son las estrellas y los expertos en esta danza. Hay famosas escuelas de flamenco en España ahora que atraen a un gran número de extranjeros procedentes de Europa, América y Oriente.

5. All Spanish people have dark hair, dark eyes, and dark skin.
This stereotype is not true. Remember that the Vandals stayed in Spain for a short period, and the Visigoths stayed in Spain for centuries. These two tribes were Germanic tribes and they left their genes in Spain. Today there are many fair skinned people with light coloured eyes and natural blond hair. It is said that the Celts, left northwest Spain for Ireland, Wales and eventually Scotland.
The dark skin is not natural, and people who live in the South or along the Mediterranean coast may have a deep tan, but that is because they may spend a lot of time outdoors while the sun is shining. Also among all of the Spanish, a deep tan is a status symbol, meaning that one has the time and money to be vacationing on the beach.

5. Todos los españoles tienen el pelo oscuro, ojos negros y piel oscura.
Este estereotipo no es cierto. Recuerde que los vándalos estuvieron en España durante un corto período, y los visigodos estuvieron en España durante siglos. Estas dos tribus eran tribus germánicas y dejaron sus genes en España. Hoy en día hay muchas personas de piel clara con ojos claros y cabello rubio natural. Se dice que los celtas dejaron el noroeste de España para ir a Irlanda, Gales y finalmente Escocia.
La piel oscura no es natural, y la gente que vive en el sur o a lo largo de la costa del Mediterráneo puede tener un fuerte bronceado, pero eso es porque pasan mucho tiempo al aire libre mientras luce el sol. También entre los españoles, un intenso bronceado es símbolo de estatus; significa que uno tiene el tiempo y el dinero para ir de vacaciones a la playa.

6. Spain is the land of paella and sangria.
Yes, this is true. The Spanish love paella and in almost every part of Spain one can find some sort of paella in the restaurants. In many parts of Spain, when people go out to the countryside to partake of nature, instead of a barbecue, they will cook paella. The paella has many different forms and the most famous one is the paella Valenciana, originally from Valencia. If one goes to Valencia, one can try the many different forms of paella. There is one that looks black, because it is made with little squids and their ink makes the paella look black.
The sangria is not so popular with the Spaniards, as it is with tourists. The Spanish prefer to drink good red wine from nationally famous DOs. Red wine is drunk with everything in Spain. In other countries there are rules, such as that with fish one drinks white wine, but in Spain they prefer to drink red wine.
Wine making is one of the principal industries in many parts of Spain, such as in La Rioja. Spanish wines have found favour in many foreign countries because they have very good quality at very reasonable prices. Spanish wines have won prizes over famous wines from other European countries. The Spanish winemakers are modernizing their wine making facilities and planting better varieties of grapes.

6. España es la tierra de la paella y la sangría.
Sí, es cierto. A los españoles les encanta la paella y en casi cualquier parte de España se puede encontrar algún tipo de paella en los restaurantes. En muchas partes de España, cuando la gente sale al campo para disfrutar de la naturaleza, en lugar de una barbacoa, preparan una paella. Hay muchos tipos de paella pero la más famosa es la paella Valenciana, originalmente de Valencia. Si uno va a Valencia, uno puede probar las diferentes y numerosas recetas de paella. Hay una que parece de color negro, porque se hace con calamares pequeños y su tinta hace que la paella se vea negra.
La sangría no es tan popular entre los españoles, como lo es entre los turistas. Los españoles prefieren beber buen vino tinto de famosas Denominaciones de Origen nacionales. El vino tinto se bebe con todo en España. En otros países existen normas, como la que con el pescado se bebe vino blanco, pero en España prefieren beber vino tinto.
La elaboración del vino es una de las principales industrias en muchas partes de España, como en La Rioja. Los vinos españoles gustan en muchos países extranjeros, porque tienen muy buena calidad a precios muy razonables. Los vinos españoles han ganado premios por delante de vinos famosos de otros países europeos. Los enólogos españoles están modernizando sus bodegas y plantando mejores variedades de uva.

7. Spain is the land of fiestas.
Yes, this is true. Every city, town and village has a fiesta once a year. Many times it is to honor their patron saint. People in Spain like to have fun and the fiesta is the time to have it. This is the reason that many foreigners come to visit Spain, to see and enjoy the fiesta. Most of the fiestas are very colorful events, when the Spanish put on the costumes of their region and cook the food their region is famous for.

7. España es el país de las fiestas.
Sí, es cierto. Cada ciudad grande, pequeña y pueblo tiene una fiesta una vez al año. Muchas veces es en honor a su santo patrono. A los españoles les gusta divertirse y la fiesta es el momento de hacerlo. Esta es la razón por la que muchos extranjeros vienen a visitar España, para ver y disfrutar de la fiesta. La mayoría de las fiestas son eventos muy coloridos, cuando los españoles visten sus trajes regionales y preparan las comidas que dan fama a su región.

8. The Spanish love their ham.
This is true. The most appreciated ham among the Spanish is the “pata negra” from the province of Huelva. The pigs from this region have black hooves, and that is the meaning of “pata negra”. The pigs eat acorns in oak forests. The acorns have very high contents of antioxidants, so the ham from these pigs is quite lean and healthy. Scientific studies have shown that eating this type of ham will lower one’s cholesterol. The ham has a slightly nutty taste and is considered a gourmet item in Spain.
Many other people in the world have visited Spain and tried the ham and now have a taste for it. Spain is about to start exporting this ham to all parts of the world. One Spanish company has won approval to sell its ham to the U.S., a very big potential market. Spain is also trying to sell ham to China, a country that loves pork products.

8. A los españoles les encanta su jamón.
Esto es cierto. El jamón más apreciado entre los españoles es el “pata negra” de la provincia de Huelva. Los cerdos de esta región tienen las pezuñas negras, de lo la denominación “pata negra”. Los cerdos comen bellotas en los bosques de roble. Las bellotas tienen un contenido muy alto en antioxidantes, por lo que el jamón de los cerdos es muy magro y saludable. Los estudios científicos han demostrado que el consumo de este tipo de jamón reduce el colesterol. El jamón tiene un ligero sabor a nuez y se considera un alimento de gourmet en España.
Muchas personas en el mundo han visitado España y probado el jamón y se han aficionado a él. España está a punto de exportar el jamón a todas las partes del mundo. Una empresa española consiguió el permiso para vender su jamón a los EE.UU., un mercado con un potencial muy grande. España también está tratando de vender jamón a China, un país al que le encantan los productos porcinos.

9. The Spanish men are latin lovers.
The majority of Spanish men do not meet the stereotype of the latin lover. However the latin lover is alive and well in Spain. One just has to look at national TV, which loves to report on the exploits of many famous playboys. These playboys are tall, not necessarily dark, but all of them are very handsome and very macho. They are armed with huge amounts of charm, are very entertaining, and are very experienced in the arts of seduction. Their victims are young beautiful women, many who have money. So these men are like bees, pollinating as many flowers as possible. However the Don Juan types are not good husband material, because once they conquer someone, they lose interest and look for another. Many foreign women succumb to these men, to their later anguish and regret.
Because of the mixture of races, one can say that the genes Spanish have are very strong and vibrant, and they produce very beautiful women and handsome men. One has to just sit at a sidewalk café and observe the people passing by to see some physically very beautiful people passing by. This is one of the joys of visiting Spain!

9. Los españoles son “latin lovers”.
La mayoría de los hombres españoles no cumplen con el estereotipo del latin lover. Sin embargo, el latin lover está vivo y goza de buena salud en España. Uno sólo tiene que ver la televisión nacional, a la que le encanta informar de las hazañas de muchos famosos playboys. Estos calaveras son altos, no necesariamente morenos, y todos ellos son muy guapos y muy masculinos. Poseen muchísimo encanto, son muy divertidos, y tienen mucha experiencia en las artes de la seducción. Sus víctimas son hermosas jóvenes, con dinero la mayoría. Así que estos hombres son como las abejas, polinizando cuantas más flores como sea posible. Sin embargo, el tipo Don Juan no es madera de buen marido, porque una vez que conquistan a alguien, pierden el interés y buscan a otra. Muchas mujeres extranjeras sucumben a estos hombres, para angustia y pesar suyo después.
Debido a la mezcla de razas, se puede decir que los españoles tienen los genes muy fuertes e impetuosos, y producen mujeres muy hermosas y hombres guapos. Uno sólo tiene que sentarse a la terraza de una cafetería y observar a la gente pasar para ver a personas físicamente muy hermosas. ¡Es una de las alegrías de visitar España!

10. Conclusions
There is much more to Spain than what the stereotypes paint. Spain is a modern, industrialized country, with a high economic growth rate. The Spanish are determined to improve their standards of living. They also want to project a new image to the rest of the world because some of the stereotypes about them are negative and are not true. They will keep the positive stereotypes.

Hay mucho más en España de lo que los estereotipos pintan. España es un país moderno, industrializado, con una alta tasa de crecimiento económico. Los españoles están decididos a mejorar su nivel de vida. Ellos también quieren proyectar una nueva imagen hacia el resto del mundo, porque algunos de los estereotipos acerca de ellos son negativos y no son verdad. Sólo mantendrán los estereotipos positivos.
